Nuclear Energy in the Philippines: Opportunities Amid Rising Demand

The Philippines is reigniting its nuclear energy ambitions as it seeks to meet rising power demand and reduce reliance on coal. The government recently passed the Philippine National Nuclear Energy Safety Act, establishing the Philippine Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (PhilATOM) to ensure strong oversight and safety compliance.

Under the country’s Nuclear Energy Roadmap, two nuclear power plants are planned to be operational by 2032, with a goal of generating 4,800 MW from nuclear sources by 2050. Small modular reactors (SMRs) and advanced nuclear technologies are being explored as more cost-efficient options.

For foreign firms, opportunities are emerging in regulatory consulting, engineering, technology provision, waste management and training. With growing international collaboration and policy momentum, the Philippines is positioning itself as a key player in Southeast Asia’s nuclear energy future.
